The first of the ‘Townland stones’ was unveiled by Jarlath Burns the Chairman of the National 125 Committee. The first stone has been set at the Eight-mile Bridge denoting the boundary between Carcullion in which the village is situated, and Ballymaghery in which the Clonduff Club is situated. About 70 stones will be required to complete the project – they are being phased in, as funds become available – if anyone out there wishes to be part of this great project of resurrecting and restoring the townlands in the Parish of Clonduff please get in touch with any member of the Club.
The occasion was witnessed by a small group of Clonduff personnel and members of the local Historical Society, all of whom were entertained to a cup of tea in the Clubrooms before the event. The rain poured down at the tea-drinking but miraculously the sun shone for the unveiling as the photos in the slideshow on the left will show – click on the picture to view the slideshow.
The granite stones are being crafted by local craftsman Tony Branagan.
Jarlath congratulated Clonduff as one of the few clubs who whole-heartedly embraced all the Gaelic sports and spoke of the importance of GAA Clubs in not only keeping the townland unit alive but also the Irish Language.
As a token of appreciation Jarlath was presented with a glass plaque beautifully crafted by another local craftsman Patsy O’Hagan.
