Saturday afternoon (10th July 2021) was the warmest day of the year, so far, in more ways than one when Clonduff took on Longstone in Mayobridge in the Plate Final of Corn an Dúin. There was little between the teams and Clonduff were 2 points ahead when the ‘Stone struck for goal and shortly after repeated the performance and Clonduff went in at the break 2 points down 2-5 to 0-9. On the resumption Clonduff struck for a goal of their own to take the lead, albeit briefly with Arthur finishing off a sweet and swift move from the throw-in. The ‘Stone were resilient and took a 4 point lead shortly after the second water-break but Clonduff stuck at their task and had reduced the deficit to a point late in the game when disaster struck – Clonduff had a man red-carded! However, it was The Yellas who scored the next 2 points but in injury time Longstone once again levelled the match to take it into injury time on a score of 2-12 apiece.
Parity of numbers was restored and in the first half of extra time both teams scored 2 points. In the final period of extra time, Clonduff’s fitness stood them in good stead, when they tagged on 4 points with a single point from Longstone – the Clonduff defence was immense in this period.
This was certainly no ‘walk in the park’ with no quarter asked nor given by either side! It was a great game to watch though not good for the heart!!!
The Plate was presented to Clonduff Captain Ross Carr by County PRO Paula Magee.
