Well done to the Down Senior men who have made great strides during 2023. They had a good McKenna Cup and Div 3 League campaign narrowly missing out on promotion by a single point. It was then on to the Championship when Down’s first game was at home (Pairc Esler) to Donegal who played in Div 1 (though relegated) – Down produced a bit of a shock to everyone (except themselves) by defeating Donegal by 5 points to set up a semi final v Armagh. This one didn’t work out, however so then Down found themselves in the Tailteann Cup.
The Tailteann Cup group games paired them with Waterford at home, Tipperary away and Meath on neutral ground – They won the first two comfortably and assured themselves of a quarter final place before the Meath game (Parnell Park, Dublin 3rd June), for which we await the outcome! Watch this space!
The County Cause has been strengthened by the input of three Clonduff lads Eamon Brown, Paddy Branagan and Ross Carr. Earlier in the year There was Barry O’Hagan who suffered a major knee injury in the McKenna Cup game at home to Antrim – Get well soon Barry; and Tom Close who cut his inter-county career short this year to go travelling following his graduation.
The picture shows (top) Eamon on his way to scoring a goal against Waterford; bottom left Paddy and bottom right Ross – all v Waterford in Pairc Esler.
Onwards and upwards!
