The sun shone brightly for a change as twenty participants (equalling last year’s record) converged at the base of the Hen Mountain for the Annual Poc Fada. A massive crowd of spectators (surpassing last year) made it up to the top to watch the proceedings (was this the result of the Hillbillies Walking Club?). The courses were laid out, as always, by stalwart Damian Farnon.
The U16 boys and girls were first to take to the mountain, each accompanied by one of the adult competitors as their marker. They received every encouragement from their friends and families who had made the steep climb to the top. The boys event was won by Brendan Britton (16 pocs) whilst the girls event was won by Mollie Brown (25 pocs). Club Hurling Rep Alistair McGilligan presented the juvenile trophies.
The adults then took to the hill – it’s still hard to get the Camogs out in numbers – cheered on by the enthusiastic supporters atop The Hen. Both John Murphy (17 pocs) and Orla Maginn (23 pocs) (pictured left and right above) retained their titles – John was pushed all the way with quite a number only one or two pocs behind but there was no-one this year to push Orla! Come on Girls show the men you are not afraid of climbing! Senior Trophies were presented to the winners by Senior Hurling Manager Gerry Coughlin. A great time was had by all!
