BRIAN McGREEVY U8 MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT 2016

A section of the 400 children that attended the Brian McGreevy U8 Tournament in 2016
Clonduff Park was bathed in glorious sunshine on Saturday 4th June for the 11th annual Brian McGreevy Memorial U8½ Football Tournament in sharp contrast to the rain, hail and cold of the first Saturday in June 2015! 26 teams – well over 400 children – from Down, Armagh, Tyrone, Louth, Meath, Dublin and Kildare attended. The was a team from Clane Co Kildare who had left their club at 7am – in a note of thanks the mentors said the children said it was the best day ever!
It was a wonderful festival of juvenile football and sportsmanship. Each team got a minimum of six mini games with those reaching the finals of the knockout phase another two. The day belonged to the youngsters and it was very heartening to hear most mentors praising the efforts of the children even when they lost a game.
At the end of it all the results were as follows:
Cup – Ballyholland beat Moy (Co Tyrone)
Shield – Byransford beat Clonduff
Plate – Clann Eireann (Lurgan) beat Burren
We wish to thank everyone who made the day such a success – The McGreevy Family, organisers, administrators, clubs who attended, Clonduff parents for providing the sandwiches, referees, score keepers, runners, shop/burger bar assistants, tea makers, dish washers, those who prepared the pitches and cleaned up after, Clonduff Minor and Senior footballers and our Goldmark Young Volunteer candidates who were very much in evidence wearing their distinctive orange high viz vests. An event like this couldn’t happen without the input of so many volunteers – and add into this the mentors of all the teams! Well done everyone!
