Seven Teams turned up for the tournament which was played on a ‘round robin’ basis with the four best placed going into the Semi Finals. Clonduff qualified for the play offs winning four, drawing one and losing one game in the group games.
These results left Clonduff joint top with Mitchels, resulting in a semi-final meeting with Saul. Clonduff stormed off to a 6 but two quick goals in the second half from Saul left the Yellas having to come from behind to win 0-9 to 2-2.
The final was against Castlewellan, who had beaten Mitchels in the other semi final and with the players already having played for 86 minutes it was to be a test of their fitness and their will to win against a team that had already beaten them once. Again Clonduff started well going into a good lead taking some lovely points but let Castlewellan back into it just before halftime leaving it level at 0-8 to 2-2. The boys showed great courage and workrate to go out and build up a 1-13 to 2-4 winning margin after having lost a big lead in the first half. They worked hard throughout the tournament but it wasn’t until the semi-final that they realised a point was a good score! The boys were presented with a set of jerseys for winning the County title.
Clonduff go onto the Ulster Óg Spoirt representing Down and with players returning from holidays a good turnout at training is required to work on Sevens football if they are to do themselves justice. A bit of a fight for places might just spur them on!
