CONNOR McCONVILLE PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ TOURNAMENT RETURNS IN 2022
Following a two-year absence due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, glorious sunshine bathed down on the 24 teams from 14 primary schools from South Down who took part in the Connor McConville Gaelic football tournament, today in Clonduff Park, Hilltown.
The young players enjoyed a feast of Gaelic Football played to a very high standard. A large number of parents and supporters turned out to cheer on the young players.
The competition was played in three sections and eight teams progressed to the quarter finals. In the semi-finals Carrick Og’s overcame Carrick Gaels, while Saval defeated Barr. St Colman’s PS, were the current title holders, and it was an exciting final played to a very high standard. Carrick came out on top and were very worthy winners.
Before the presentations Mrs Geraldine Smyth Principal of St Patrick’s PS thanked all those who had worked so hard to make the day such a success, This included the McConville family, the teachers in the school, Ms McNeill, Mr McConville, and Mr Flannigan, all the schools that took part, the referees Alan Grant, PJ Quinn, Willie Fitzpatrick and Collie Gribben.
Thanks to Jimmie Cousins, the man on the Mike, and he had the games running like clockwork. Thanks to Goretta & Shane Cairns who had a busy day in the club shop.
Arty Noel McConville presented medals to the Runners-up, St Colman’s Saval. The Connor McConville Cup and winners’ trophies were then presented to Carrick Primary School who have participated in the competition every year since it began in 1995.
