Jordan Mines (standing, extreme left) was awarded the Lily Murray Cup for ‘Player of the Tournament’
Saturday 30th May 2015 dawned bright and clear as teams from Down, Armagh, Tyrone, Louth, Meath and Dublin converged on Clonduff Park for the 40th running of the Gary Murray Tournament. It was a fabulous festival of juvenile football – a wonderful demonstration of what is going on around the country with the children – the grassroots of our games. Many thanks to all who attended as players, mentors, parents or supporers.
There was a break for lunch when the groups games were completedand then it was into the serious business of the knockout stages.
The Clonduff tournaments are structured in such a way that all teams have a chance of picking up silverware and medals – with the Cup, (top group finishers), the Shield (middle group) and Plate (last in group.
The three Gary Murray finals took place simultaneously with the Cup being contested between the two Kilmacud teams (Dublin) with Kilmacud 1 just edging their counterparts; Cullyhanna (Armagh) and Roche Emmets (Louth) contested the Shield with the South Armagh side emerging victorious; the Plate was contested between Naoimh Muhire (Meath) and Moy (Tyrone) with Naomh Mhuire just edging it.
The Lily Murray Cup for the Player of the Tournament was awarded to Jordan Mines from the winning Kilmacud team.
A great big ‘Thank You’ to all those who helped in any way – Paul Close, Daniel Grant, Colin Grant, Shane Quinn, Michel Fitzpatrick and Sean Cowan who set out the pitches on Friday night; our senior players Bernard, Stephen, Mark, Patrick (and numerous others) who refereed games throughout the day; those who acted as umpires, the young people who acted as ‘runners’; the parents who provided an abundance of sandwiches, cakes, etc for the lunch, helped with the lunch and the clean-up afterwards; Goretta and Noleen in the Shop, Laurine on Burgers; those who administered the tournament and kept things running like clockwork and a special word of thanks to The Murray Family, four generations of whom attended the tournament and helped in many different ways particularly with the distribution of prizes.
Everyone agreed that it was a great day out and they are so looking forward to next year!
