Pairc Chluain Daimh basked in glorious sunshine on mid-summer’s day, Saturday 21st June for the second running of the Mark Mooney U14 LGFA Memorial tournament.
The eight teams present – Clonduff, Burren GAA, Ballymartin GAC, Clann na Banna CLG. St. John Bosco GAC Newry, Bryansford GAC and two from Cooley Kickhams put on a fabulous display of Ladies Football in two groups – the top two finishers in each group went on to compete for the Cup with the others competing for the shield in the semi finals:
Cup:
Clonduff v Cooley Kickhams
Burren v Bryansford
Shield:
Cooley Kickhams 2 v Clann na Banna
St John Bosco v Ballymartin
In the Shield Final Cooley Kickhams 2 defeated St John Bosco and in a great Cup Final Burren defeated Clonduff, Both games were very worthy finals and had everything such finals should have – skill, passion, sportsmanship and fantastic supporters.
In line with the Clonduff Healthy Club policy fruit and ice-cold drinks for the players and mentors were available throughout the morning – both very welcome in the searing heat.
Before the presentations, Jimmie Cousins on behalf of Clonduff Club thanked The Mooney Family, the teams that played, the organisers, the many volunteers (sporting their yellow bibs), the referees, parents for the food and support, the shop staff and the barbecue staff, under the guidance of burger-maker in chief Peter Hamill!
Ryan Arthurs responded on behalf of the Mooney Family saying how proud his Father (Mark Mooney) and Grandfather (Dalsey Mooney) would be of their beloved club and of the clubs who had honoured Mark’s memory on the day.
Various members of the family presented the runners-up and winners medals to the respective teams with Granny Eileen presenting the Shield to Cooley and the Cup to Burren.
Some teams who were there for the first time asked to be invited back next year – they were so impressed with the organisation, the welcome and the amount of high-quality football that was played.
Maith sibh gach duine!
