SOUTH DOWN AWARDS 2013

Gaels from all over South Down converged on Rostrevor GAA Social Club on Friday night for the Annual Awards which followed the magnificent meal provided. The Clonduff Instrumental Musicians (Paul & Thomas Kelly, Sean & Mary Catherine Murray), as reigning County Champions provided the entertainment for the arrival of the guests and then Paul got the formal proceedings under way with his rendition of Amhrán na bhFiann. There were guests from the County and East Down Boards but the Guest of honour was the hilarious Benny Tierney who regaled the crowd with stories and anecdotes – true or otherwise – before the presentation of the awards which were as follows:
Juvenile Referee: Michael O’Rourke (An Riocht), Gerard Brennan (Clonduff), Gerard Rooney (Longstone)
Senior Referee: Paul Faloon (Drumgath but born in Hilltown), Neil Cousins (An Riocht), Fergal Laverty (St Michael’s)
Player of the Year: Donal O’Hare (Burren), Conor Harrison (Glasdrumman), Niall Madine (Saval)
Chairman’s Awards: Cumann Pheadar Naofa (125), Mayobridge (125), St John Bosco, Newry (50)
Special Presentations: Burren (All Ireland Feile), Southern Regional College (All Ireland Div 3 League & Championship, Glenn All Ireland Scor na nÓg Quiz winners, All Ireland Handball winners including Clonduff player Sean McNally, Down All Ireland Minor Camogie winning team (Div 2), Karen Tinnelly Camogie Soaring Star

At the end of the evening one of the magnificent flower arrangements was presented to the Clonduff Chairman, Brendan to place on Jerry Quinn’s grave and the other presented to Tullylish club to place on Paddy McFlynn’s grave – both men were so much a part of 2012 awards.
