A fantastic festival of football took place in Clonduff Park, Hilltown on Wednesday 7th June for the Connor McConville Gaelic Football Tournament.

Almost 250 children from the primary schools around South Down enjoyed the occasion in great spirit and fun, playing Gaelic football to a very high standard.
A large number of parents and supporters turned out to cheer on the young players.

The competition was played in three sections and eight teams progressed to the quarter finals. In the semi-finals Mayobridge Primary School overcame Kilcoo Primary School, while Burren defeated Barr Primary School. Carrick PS Burren and St Patrick’s PS Mayobridge was an exciting final played to a very high standard with St Patrick PS Mayobridge coming out on top.

Before the presentations Sheenagh Walsh (nee McConville) spoke on behalf of the McConville family, emphasising their commitment to honouring the memory of a son and brother who passed away 33 years ago this year. Sheenagh reflected on the pride her family have in honouring Connor’s memory through Gaelic Games for Primary School Children, and highlighted how the tournament goes from strength to strength each year. Through the Connor McConville Tournament a platform has been created for the children to develop and express their skills in a fun and competitive environment, strongly contributing to the Gaelic Football development of young children in the area. Thanking all those who helped behind scenes to create a well organised and highly respected event in the school calendar. With a special mention to Mrs Smyth, Ms McNeill and all in St Patrick’s PS for their continued hard work and support of Connor’s Tournament. Sheenagh recognised the help provided each year from Jimmie Cousins, who keeps the games running like clockwork. Also, thanking Suzanne, Christine and Kathy for looking after the refreshments for everyone on the day and the shop volunteers Goretta and Shane Cairns, highlighting the family’s sincere appreciation.

Mrs Geraldine Smyth Principal of St Patrick’s PS thanked all those who had worked so hard to make the day such a success, this included the McConville family, Ms Maeve McNeill, all the schools that took part, the referees Alan Grant, PJ Quinn & Colm Gribben.
