The 2017 Ulster Colleges Camogie All Stars received their awards at a Gala awards dinner at the Elk on Friday night 20th April 2018. Twice postponed due to snow in January and February; it was third time lucky as the awards ceremony was finally held at the Elk. Twenty-two camogs received awards on the night, with four from Down including Clara Cowan, Sacred Heart, Newry and Beth Fitzpatrick, St. Mark’s, Warrenpoint.
President of the Camogie Association Kathleen Woods (from Armagh) presented the awards along with Carla Doherty, guest of honour and former Geraldine’s Portglenone and Antrim star.
Beth is a Year 13 pupil at St. Mark’s who captained the U16 school camogie team to victory in the County Cup Championship Final. She was accompanied by her parents Cathy and Dermot and teacher Conor Rogers and was described as ‘a very stylish player’ who has ‘an immense work rate’.
Clara is a Year 13 pupil at Sacred Heart and is the school’s senior camogie captain. Accompanied by her parents Marie and Sean and teachers Ciara Hayes and Ann-Marie McKevitt; she was described on the night as ‘a super reader of the game’ who can play ‘in literally any position’.
Both girls also play for Clonduff’s Minor and Senior camogie teams; last year the Seniors won the league, the championship and were narrowly defeated in an Ulster Final. Next weekend Beth and Clara will play for the Down Camogie Minor team against Kildare in an All-Ireland Camogie final
